A design-build renovation of downtown Bakersfield's 1950 Woolworth's building, restoring the country's last remaining Woolworth's luncheonette alongside a concert venue, retail and offices.
The building
A renovation of the former Woolworth's department store, the American five-and-dime chain known for its lunch-counter burgers, grilled cheese and milkshakes. The building was designed in the late 1930s in the Late Moderne style, shelved during World War II, and built in 1950 in downtown Bakersfield.
The lunch counter
The renovation includes the country's last remaining Woolworth's luncheonette, once a fixture of American main streets. The lunch counter, stools, cooking equipment, backsplash, terrazzo floors and wood paneling were all restored.
Three floors, new uses
A tenant improvement of the basement and the first and second floors. The basement holds a 200-person concert venue and bar, a podcast room and music practice rooms. The first floor carries the historic lunch counter, a new bar, two retail spaces and an office lobby. The second floor is office space: 30 offices, two conference rooms, a break room and other amenities.
